  • Depression and menopause and both challenging, and often painful, experiences in life. So it can be very trying when they are experienced at the same time, which happens for approximately one in five women. But we should not be surprised that these two conditions often overlap, since we know there is a relationship between hormonal changes and mental health issues. Estrogen production is reduced during menopause, which results in less serotonin in the brain. And serotonin helps regulate our moods. All of which means that women who experience depression during menopause are advised to see their doctor to make sure they are receiving the correct treatments, including medications. They should also try and reduce stress, get as much exercise as is practical, avoid cigarettes and alcohol and stay socially engaged. All of these steps can make for a healthier and happier time for those struggling with menopause and depression.
